Syria is a country in the early portion of stage 3 of the DTM. The death rates have dropped down to a very low rate. Birth rates remain somewhat higher due to cultural lag. Syria's advance into late stage 3 or stage 4 may be delayed by war and the lack of a stable government, but if the political issues in Syria can be resolved we may see continued modernization and possibly Syria will reach stage 4 by 2050.
Syria has been through many wars and rebellions over the last several centuries. In 1946 Syria gained independence from France in 1946, shortly after WW2. During 1963 a military coup ended the treaty merging Syria and Egypt, making Syria once again an independent nation. Later on Syria fought through wars with both Lebanon and Israel. Now Syria is undergoing a bloody rebellion between anti-government rebels and Syria's armed forces. All of these events have clearly had an impact on population, population growth, birth rates, death rates, and net immigration.
